On the death of Cecil Taylor

"To me, the piano in itself is an orchestra"
Long before Cecil Taylor left his earthly body on April 5th, his music had since taken him far beyond earth's stratosphere. Music that sounds like Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk taking a hike to the edge of the known universe to give, on the edge of a black hole, a hell of a jam (waving to Stephen Hawking in the process).

First of two blog posts in which the jazz chop goes pop 
The contacts and crossovers between jazz and pop/rock music have been beneficial to both, although there are some examples where pop/rock overdid their job on ‘jazz’ records. Some jazz people and influences within the pop/rock genre are presented here, not unimportantly as an excuse to show some nice footage, but hey: isn’t that one of the points around here? (Read on below the image)

Much can be said and written about John Coltrane. Not so coincidentally (more about that later), I stumbled upon a Dutch TV item (Podium Witteman, from 37:16, in Dutch) about the phenomenon of ‘standards’ (both in classical and contemporary music) and My Favorite Things was discussed by show host Paul Witteman and regular guest contributor and composer Mike Boddé.

Sonny Rollins

I heard Sonny Rollins live in concert two times. Both were incredibly inspiring. The last time I saw him was when he played at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The hall was sold out. Rollins played with such an indescribable energy. He always went forward, straight into the music, the groove, the flow.
